CARTIER, FRANCOIS STAGS LOCKED IN MORTAL COMBAT 19THC

Thomas Francois Cartier( French 1879-1943) sculptured this magnificent bronze stags locked in mortal combat in the late 19th Century. This bronze shows 2 stags interlocked together to see who would have dominance in the herd. This sculpture came from the era of the great animalier French sculptors & follows the style of this era. The bronze is signed on the base of the statue 7 measures 21 in. in length, 11 in. ht., 7 in. in width, in very good condition, & no noticeable faults.

   T. Cartier was a pupil of George Gardet & Cartier exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artstes Francais were he received several awards & a gold medal in 1927.He is listed in Bebezeit, vol.3, p.499 . Benezeit also states that this similar bronze sold in Paris June 23, 1971 for FRP 580, Versailles June 22, 1980 for 4000 FRP, & Paris March 27, 1984 for 6000. When we were in Paris last year we saw at the Paris Flea Market one dealer had the same similar bronze marked for 4000 euros & another dealer 6000 euros. Any questions, feel free to inquire.
